Calories burned by activity
Same weight and duration across common activities, for comparison.
A MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) expresses how hard an activity is relative to sitting still. One MET is your resting rate; running at 6 mph is about 9.8 METs, or nearly ten times harder. Calories burned scale with your body weight and how long you keep going.
Heavier people burn more for the same activity because moving more mass costs more energy. These are estimates; heart-rate monitors personalise the number further.
They are good population averages but can be off by 10–15% for any individual, since fitness and efficiency vary. Use them for comparison rather than precise tracking.
The MET formula includes resting metabolism as its baseline (1 MET). To find calories burned above rest, subtract your resting rate for the same time.
