GFR Calculator

Estimate your kidney function (eGFR) from a serum creatinine test using the race-free CKD-EPI 2021 equation, and see the matching chronic kidney disease stage.

Enter the creatinine value from a recent blood test.

Interpretation

Your eGFR on the CKD scale

Higher is better. The pointer marks your eGFR; bands are the CKD stages.

How it works

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) measures how well your kidneys filter waste from blood. It is estimated from serum creatinine, age, and sex using the 2021 CKD-EPI equation, which removed the race coefficient used in older versions.

CKD stages by eGFR

StageeGFRMeaning
G190+Normal
G260–89Mildly reduced
G3a / G3b30–59Moderately reduced
G415–29Severely reduced
G5Under 15Kidney failure

Stages G1 and G2 are only considered chronic kidney disease if other markers of kidney damage are present.

Frequently asked questions

Is eGFR a diagnosis?

No. It is an estimate that supports diagnosis. A single result can be affected by hydration, muscle mass, and recent meals, so doctors look at trends and other tests.

Why did the race coefficient get removed?

The 2021 equation dropped the race adjustment to give a single, more equitable estimate for all adults. This calculator uses that updated formula.
