How it works

A healthy weight is usually defined as a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. Rearranging the BMI formula for weight gives a low and high healthy weight for any height, since BMI = weight ÷ height². Multiply each BMI cut-off by your height squared to get the range.

Lower weight = 18.5 × height(m)²
Upper weight = 24.9 × height(m)²

The range widens for taller people, which is why a single "ideal number" is less useful than a band.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI the best way to judge a healthy weight?

It is a useful starting point but does not account for muscle or fat distribution. Pair it with waist circumference and body-fat percentage for a fuller view.

What if I'm very muscular?

Muscle is dense, so athletes may exceed the "healthy" BMI weight without excess fat. In that case, body-fat percentage is a better guide.
