The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends a total pregnancy weight-gain range based on your pre-pregnancy BMI. Most of the gain happens in the second and third trimesters at a fairly steady weekly rate, after a small first-trimester gain of around 0.5–2 kg (1–4 lb).
| Pre-pregnancy BMI | Total gain |
|---|---|
| Underweight (<18.5) | 12.5–18 kg (28–40 lb) |
| Normal (18.5–24.9) | 11.5–16 kg (25–35 lb) |
| Overweight (25–29.9) | 7–11.5 kg (15–25 lb) |
| Obese (30+) | 5–9 kg (11–20 lb) |
Gaining a little more or less than the guideline is common. Persistent large deviations are worth discussing with your provider, who can factor in your individual situation.
Yes — recommended gain is higher for multiples. This calculator uses single-baby guidelines, so add extra if you are expecting twins, per your provider's advice.
