Monthly fulfillment cost by component
Which part of fulfillment is driving your total cost.
A 3PL or fulfillment center bill is rarely a single line item. It's built from five moving parts, and knowing how each is priced is what lets you actually control your cost per order instead of just watching the invoice total.
You ship 500 orders a month, storing 100 cu ft at $0.75/cu ft ($75), with pick & pack at $3.25/order (500 × 3.25 = $1,625) and shipping at $6.50/order (500 × 6.50 = $3,250). Receiving 600 units at $0.35/unit adds $210, and a 5% return rate (25 returns) at $4.00 each adds $100. Total: 75 + 1,625 + 3,250 + 210 + 100 = $5,260, or about $10.52 per order.
| Cost component | Typical rate |

| Storage (standard shelf/bin) | $0.50 - $1.00 / cu ft / month |
| Storage (pallet) | $15 - $30 / pallet / month |
| Pick & pack (single item) | $2.50 - $5.00 / order |
| Additional item pick fee | $0.50 - $1.00 / extra unit |
| Inbound receiving | $0.25 - $0.75 / unit |
| Returns processing | $2.00 - $6.00 / return |
