How GST works in Australia

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a flat 10% tax added to most goods and services sold in Australia, unchanged since it started in July 2000. If a price is GST-exclusive, add 10% to find the price the customer pays. If a price is GST-inclusive, the GST is already baked in and equal to 1/11th of that total.

The formula

if excluding GST: GST = price × 10%, total = price × 1.10
if including GST: GST = price ÷ 11, price excluding GST = price ÷ 1.10

Worked example

A product is priced at $110 including GST. Dividing by 11 gives $10.00 GST, leaving a $100.00 GST-exclusive price. Going the other way, a $100 GST-exclusive price has $10 of GST added to reach the same $110 GST-inclusive total.
