A paycheck calculator shows what you actually keep from your salary after every mandatory withholding: federal income tax, state income tax where it applies, and FICA payroll tax. Because state income tax rules vary enormously, from zero in nine states to a top marginal rate above 13% in California, the same salary produces a noticeably different take-home depending on where you live and work. This calculator applies real 2026 federal tax brackets and the 2026 Social Security wage base to every state, then layers on each state's own 2026 income tax brackets and standard deduction.
Nine states currently charge no individual income tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming. At the other end, states like Oregon and California take a noticeably larger bite at middle incomes because of how their brackets and deductions are structured, even though the very top marginal rates only apply to much higher earners. North Dakota is a useful middle-ground example: it does levy state income tax, but at a comparatively modest effective rate on a typical salary.
Enter a state, your annual gross salary, filing status, pay frequency, and any pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) or health insurance premiums. The calculator subtracts pre-tax deductions from your gross pay, applies the 2026 federal tax brackets and standard deduction, applies your state's 2026 income tax brackets and standard deduction (or $0 if your state has none), then subtracts FICA, 6.2% Social Security up to the $184,500 wage base plus 1.45% Medicare (1.45% + 0.9% above $200,000). What's left is your net annual take-home, divided across your chosen pay schedule.
This is a state-level estimate. It does not include local or county income taxes that some cities and counties add on top, for example New York City, Ohio municipalities, Pennsylvania's local Earned Income Tax, or Maryland's county piggyback tax, so your real paycheck may run somewhat lower in those areas. Open your state's dedicated calculator below for state-specific notes on local taxes and Social Security treatment.

Pick your state in the calculator above, enter your annual salary, filing status, pay frequency, and any pre-tax deductions, then read your estimated take-home pay per paycheck. The tool applies real 2026 federal tax brackets, your state’s 2026 income tax rules, and FICA automatically.
Nine states currently levy no individual income tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming. Residents of these states only have federal income tax and FICA withheld from their paycheck.
Based on this calculator’s $80,000 single-filer benchmark, Oregon currently has the highest effective state income tax bite, though top marginal rates (which apply only to very high incomes) are highest in states like California and New Jersey.
No. This tool estimates federal and state-level income tax plus FICA only. Some states add local or county income tax on top, for example New York City, Ohio municipalities and school districts, Pennsylvania local Earned Income Tax, and Maryland county piggyback tax, none of which are included here, so your real take-home may be somewhat lower in those areas.
It is an estimate built on real 2026 IRS federal tax brackets, the 2026 Social Security wage base, and each state’s most recently published income tax brackets and standard deduction figures. It does not account for local taxes, benefits withholding, or your specific W-4 elections, so treat the result as a close approximation, not a paystub.
Real 2026 IRS federal income tax brackets and standard deduction, the 2026 Social Security taxable wage base of $184,500, and each state’s most recently published individual income tax brackets and standard deduction, sourced from state departments of revenue and the Tax Foundation’s annual state tax rate tables.
