How to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius
Fahrenheit and Celsius are both everyday temperature scales, but they use different zero points and different step sizes. To convert, first remove Fahrenheit's 32-degree offset, then rescale by 5/9 because 100 Celsius degrees span the same range as 180 Fahrenheit degrees.
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
°C = (°F − 32) ÷ 1.8
°C = (°F − 32) ÷ 1.8
Worked example
A thermometer reads a fever of 100.4°F. Subtract 32 to get 68.4, then multiply by 5/9: 68.4 × 0.5556 = 38°C, the widely used clinical fever threshold.
Quick mental estimate
For a rough answer without a calculator, subtract 30 and halve: (°F − 30) ÷ 2. A 70°F spring day is about (70 − 30) ÷ 2 = 20°C, close to the exact 21.1°C.
