26.85 °C

K to °C conversion line

The straight line maps any Kelvin reading to Celsius. The red dot is your value; the smaller dots mark freezing, room, body and boiling temperatures.

How to convert Kelvin to Celsius

Kelvin and Celsius use the same degree size and differ only in where zero sits. Kelvin starts at absolute zero, 273.15 degrees below the Celsius freezing point, so converting is a single subtraction.

°C = K − 273.15

Worked example

A dataset lists a boiling point of 373.15 K. Subtract 273.15: 373.15 − 273.15 = 100°C, the boiling point of water at sea level.

Good to know

Because the scales share a degree size, a temperature difference is identical in both: a 15 K rise is also a 15°C rise. Any Kelvin value under 273.15 gives a negative Celsius result.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Kelvin to Celsius?

Subtract 273.15 from the Kelvin value. For example, 300 K − 273.15 = 26.85°C.

What is 273 K in Celsius?

273.15 K equals exactly 0°C, the freezing point of water; 273 K rounds to about −0.15°C.

What is 310 K in Celsius?

310.15 K equals 37°C, normal human body temperature.

Can the answer be negative?

Yes. Any Kelvin value below 273.15 converts to a negative Celsius temperature.

Is 1 K the same size as 1°C?

Yes. The two scales share a degree size, so a 1 K difference equals a 1°C difference.

Do I write °K or K?

Just K. The kelvin is an SI base unit and does not take a degree symbol.
