How it works

Torque is the turning effect of a force applied at a distance from a pivot. It equals the force multiplied by the perpendicular lever-arm length. A longer arm or a bigger force both raise the torque.

1 Nm = 0.737562 ft-lbs = 8.85075 in-lbs

Worked example

Pushing with 50 N at the end of a 0.4 m wrench gives 50 × 0.4 = 20 Nm, or about 14.75 ft-lbs.

How do you calculate torque in newton metres?

Multiply force in newtons by lever-arm distance in metres. 50 N × 0.4 m = 20 Nm.

Does force direction matter?

Yes — only the perpendicular component makes torque. This tool assumes a 90° push for maximum torque.
